Applies to: A support image contains a QR code near account, pairing or activation information.

The useful distinctions

  • QR codes encode data.
  • A code’s visible pattern does not reveal whether the encoded value is sensitive.
  • Access tokens and session identifiers are inappropriate material for a public diagnostic record.

Assess the code by its purpose

A QR pattern can look anonymous while carrying a link, identifier or other encoded value. The relevant question is what the code is for, not whether a person can read its squares unaided. If it appears in an activation or account context, keep it out of a public screenshot. This precaution does not require decoding the code or following its destination merely to decide whether a different support image would be sufficient.

Preserve the non-secret evidence

An adjacent error, step label or neutral description may be enough to explain the problem. Share those details without the code and ask the verified support route what information is necessary. Do not paste a decoded access value into a public message as a substitute for the image. The encoded and decoded forms can expose the same information. A genuine need to investigate account pairing should use the appropriate private process.

Hypothetical worked example

A fictional activation page shows a QR code beside the words Pairing expired. A viewer reports that short message, the approximate incident time and the step they reached, with the QR area excluded from any shared image. They do not decode and publish the embedded value to make the report more readable. If support needs account verification, the viewer first confirms the private route and follows its actual process.

A focused way to proceed

  1. Treat an account-related QR code as potentially sensitive until its purpose is known.
  2. Exclude the code from a shareable image.
  3. Describe the adjacent error and request a verified private process if code-related help is required.

When to stop or ask for help

Provide the error context without the QR value and ask the verified support channel for the minimum necessary private information.
