Applies to: A support record or export contains a long number whose time interpretation is unclear.

The useful distinctions

  • A bare number does not state its time unit.
  • Different units can represent the same instant with different numeric values.
  • The source format determines how the value should be interpreted.

Preserve the field’s context

A long number can look like a familiar timestamp without actually using the unit or origin the viewer expects. Keep its field label, surrounding non-sensitive context and the source format description. Do not publish a whole log to solve this question. The useful request is a definition of that field, not a guess based only on the number of digits or a conversion tool that happens to produce a recent-looking date.

Check the interpretation against an independent anchor

Once the unit and origin are confirmed, compare the result with an event whose date is already known. If the values disagree, retain both observations and ask the source owner to resolve the format rather than multiplying or dividing repeatedly until the result looks convenient. This keeps a representation question separate from a timezone question. A correct unit conversion does not by itself identify the location or display convention used for a programme.

Hypothetical worked example

A fictional export uses one numeric field in seconds and another in milliseconds for the same explicitly defined origin. The millisecond value is one thousand times the second value. Treating both as seconds would give different dates even though their source definitions describe the same instant. The viewer asks for those definitions and a known dated example instead of inferring a universal rule from the length of an unfamiliar number.

A focused way to proceed

  1. Keep the original number and its field label.
  2. Ask the source owner for the unit and time origin or format.
  3. Compare an independently known dated event before using the interpretation elsewhere.

When to stop or ask for help

Obtain the source field’s unit and format definition before applying any numeric timestamp interpretation.
